is it possible for an abdominal hernia, from losing weight, to go away?

Usually not: Because a hernia is a defect, a hole, in the abdominal wall supporting fascia.  Losing weight will help to make surgery and anesthesia safer, and make your recovery easier.  It will also minimize recurrence of hernia.  But losing weight will not make the  hole go away.

It should help.: Hiatal hernia is used synonymously with gerd, although one may have one without the other.  If you are referring to heartburn, yes, weight loss can usually improve symptoms.

: Avoid doing any activity that might put pressure inside your abdomen like lifting heavy weight or straining to poop. Weight loss is a good basic activity if you carry extra weight, but lees important than activities that may trigger the hernia to emerge or worsen.

Talk with your doc: Great question. When belly pain or any changes in our digestion are also associated with losing weight, it increases our level of our concern. If we feel bad, eat less, we will often lose weight. *but* it's important to check out other things too and make sure it's not the more worrisome things. Good for you!

Hernias: Hernias can protrude with weight loss. The fat that was plugging the opening may shrink and allow fat or abdominal organs to protrude. You should start with a physical exam to see if your hernia can be felt. A general surgeon or general internist can examine you. If it is small, an ultrasound or ct scan can image the hernia. Blood tests will not help.

Hiatal Hernia: Hernia might not improve with weight loss, but acid reflux might improve.
