Let me explain: Newborn have knee cap. Kneecaps form about the fourth month of fetal life. However, they don’t show up on x-ray very well because they’re not ossified, or bony. At this point in life, the kneecaps are made of a cartilaginous material. The growth centers surrounding the kneecap form late in developmental life in utero and may not appear until just before or just after the infant is born.

Check temperature: Breast fed infants may have several eliminations per day. Keep the baby well hydrated and continue to nurse/breast feed. Please check the baby's temperature and follow up with your Pediatrician. There may be an infection. Monitor for any blood or mucus in the stool.

Breast : Breast milk provides everything a baby needs in the first 6 months to a year of life.  Babies do not need extra water.  In fact, young babies' kidneys are immature and cannot regulate the blood's sodium levels appropriately if given too much of anything besides breast milk or formula.  Giving too much water can actually lead to seizures.  If your baby is constipated, there are a few things you can do.

1.) give pear or prune juice - 1oz/age in months/day so in your case, no more than 1 oz per day. Not only does prune or pear juice have sugar which can help soften bms, but also has fiber (notice the gritty texture when you drink it?). This does not mean that you should be feeding your baby juice as a part of his regular diet, but it's ok in daily small amounts to treat constipation.

2.) if juice does not work, then you can try a glycerine suppository which you can buy over the counter. Just cut a pea-sized piece of the glycerine and place it in the baby's anus to lubricate the hard stool. This is not meant for daily use, so if you find that your baby needs a suppository in order to have a bm despite dietary changes, discuss with your child's doctor.

3.) do not use mineral oil, laxatives or enemas. These methods are not safe for infants.

4.) finally, if constipation is persistent and not improved with any of the above recommendations, be sure to contact your baby's doctor. There are some very rare underlying disorders such as hirschprung's disease, cystic fibrosis or hypothyroidism that can cause chronic constipation.

Takes time: Your period may take a while to become regular as your body adjusts to pregnancy, delivery, lactation, and the cessation thereof.

Not exactly: Breastmilk is notoriously low in iron, even if you take supplements. Similarly, although breastmilk is usually hight in calcium, the concentration of calcium in breastmilk is not really related to your calcium consumption. A nursing mother should have adequate intake of these nutrients to maintain her own stores, not to affect the milk's composition.

? passive ?: The passive immunity a baby receives is in the form of IGG passed through the placenta prior to birth. This probably lasts about 3 months. The secretory IGA in breast milk has little to no effect on chickenpox immunity.

Yes but: You may be contagious, but breast feeding is the best way to protect your baby from illness. Practice good handwashing, don't kiss your baby on the face, and keep breast feeding!  hope you feel better soon.

Breast engorgement: Take 200mg vitamen b6 every day for the next week or so. Take Motrin for the pain and apply cold cabbage leaves to the breasts. If they become very red and tender and/or you develop a fever you should see a doctor.

i am currently breast feeding and have ppd, are there any anti-depressants i can take that have minimal sexual side effects but won't hurt my baby?

Talk with your docto: There are several antidepressants that could be considered.  Don't worry so much about the possible effect on your libido at this point.  You are breast feeding and have post partum depression. You are probably not sleeping well either.  No one should expect you to be everything for everybody.  Get yourself feeling better first!
