Normal blood flow.: You're probably hearing the blood flowing through blood vessels in the ear area.  When you have your ear on a pillow or mattress, you're blocking out environmental noises, so the normal noises of circulation become audible.

Conductive?: The carotid artery and jugular vein travel in close proximity to your inner ear.  When the conduction mechanism bringing sound from outside to your inner ear is impaired, the internal sounds, such as your heartbeat, gets amplified. Thus, you hear your heartbeat.

High blood pressure: Normally one doesn't hear their own heartbeat. However sound travels in the direction of (blood) flow &amp; the only way it gets amplified is if there is more. That happens frequently (but not most of the time) with high blood pressure, or hypertension (also known as the silent killer, but perhaps u r lucky it's not silent in your case). See a doctor, get your blood pressure checked during an episode.

i am hearing my heartbeat in my ear (i think right ear only). it seemed to have started in the morning after drinking alcohol at night. i don't know if it is related with that consumption but should i have to worry and need to seek medical help? thnx?

: Alcohol use can cause dehydration. Dehydration can lead to eustacian tube dysfunction in the ear. Try focusing today on hydration by drinking up to 3 liters of non-caffeinated fluids (esp water) to see if this corrects the problem. If it persists, see your GP for examination and diagnosis.

lately, i've been hearing my heartbeat in my right ear. when this happens, i can sort of feel it in my ear as if the blood vessel is pumping and pushing against something.. help.

Audible heartbeat: I have heard patients complain about an audible heartbeat most commonly when they are anemic. It can also commonly occur with high blood pressure. Under rare circumstances it can be due to a vascular tumor near the ear drum. Please see a doctor and ask them to check your blood pressure, complete blood count, and auditory canal. If these are normal, further investigation will be needed.

Very common: Usually not a sign of a significant problem. Changing position usually helps. Be sure to get your blood pressure checked to be sure that is not an issue.

Could be nothing: But could be a symptom of carotid artery stenosis. Not to panic. Tell your doctor about it and let them listen to your neck for a bruit. They might order ultrasound of your neck to look at the carotid arteries as well, a non-invasive, not scary test.

i have eustachian tube dysfunction which causes my ear to thump when i hiccup. ive recently started hearing a constant whooshing when im lying down and its in time with my pulse. etd related? can this go away?

: Many causes of pulsatile tinnitus. Ear wax most common .  Have someone look in your ears to see.

Yes!: "tinnitus" and "palpitations" can be caused by stress but if significant and persistent see your doctor to make sure

Not sure: I am not sure why looking down makes you aware of pulsation in your ear.  But i can tell you what you are experiencing.  The carotid artery, the large artery in the neck that supplies blood to the brain is very close to the cochlea, the hearing portion of the inner ear.  The inner ear senses these pulsations.  I am surprised that more people are not aware of this.  Called pulsatile tinnitus.
