Carpal tunnel: Carpal tunnel syndrome is very likely the cause. If the numbness/tingling involves the thumb and first 2 1/2 fingers on the same side as the palm of your hand, it is carpal tunnel.

See neurologist: It depends which finger and what brings the tingling on...If it is the 2nd, 3rd digit numbness, it may be carpal tunnel or ulanr neuropathy if the 4th and fifth...
It may come from a pinched nerve in the neck if you shooting pains from the neck down to a specific area.
Or it may be from a more spreadout proces involving damage to the nerve endings.

Maybe not: Due to the high concentration of sensory nerves in the thumb, there may be significant numbness/tingling/itching and, of course, pain with healing. Signs of infection include redness/swelling that is expanding and/or drainage of pus from the wound.  Pain in the hand toward the wrist or fever may also signify infection. Expect improvement over next few days

Positioning during sleep can cause compression on the shoulder, arm, and/or wrist, which can possibly lead to feelings of numbness in the hands. Thumb pain: Base of thumb is one of the common place to have osteoarthritis or you may have tendinitis, try anti inflammatory meds like advil (ibuprofen) or motrin, if not better have it examined.
