HDL is Good: Hdl or high density lipoprotein and LDL or low density lipoprotein are particles that are important in cholesterol metabolism.  Hdl is the "good" particle that pulls cholesterol out of the arterial wall.  Ldl is the "bad" particle particularly when it is "dense" or cholesterol laden that allow cholesterol transportation and deposition into the artery wall accelerating atherosclerosis.

Nothing: Remember the numbers you get are just about 1 of 10 things you need to do to have a long life. Lower all your risk factors to 1 and you will be ok. You were born with 1 so that's why i say 1. 2 if you have a powerful family history. Mitigate any other risk factors you have,  don't smoke or sit around eating junk. Find a CAD risk assessment tool to see how the factors affect you.

Depends: It depends on the big picture. If you're healthy, non-smoker, non-diabetic, normal BP, active, and don't have an unusually worrisome family history, a minor elevation of LDL is not terribly important. However, each risk factor is additive. You get to subtract a risk factor if your HDL is &gt;60. At 35, your risk is pretty doggone close to zero.

Old school vs new: Previously, we stated that HDL greater than 60mg/dL was protective &amp; allowed us to subtract a risk factor when calculating risk for future heart attack. We then decided your LDL goal based upon risk. Since 11/13, we no longer have LDL &quot;goals&quot;. Instead, we have 4 groups who may benefit from statins (only drug proven to prevent heart attacks, not just lower LDL). So focus on lifestyle then recheck

Abnormal but..: Total cholesterol is above normal cutoff (170 mg/dl) but LDL, 'so called bad cholesterol,' is not high enough to warrant drug therapy.  Regular exercise  and proper diet should be emphasized.

Non-hdl: Non-hdl is considered the worse of them all. Ldl and vldl can reflect the amount of non- HDL you have in your body. Hdl is protective and triglycerides are good if not above 150 fasting.

LDL and HDL: In general high LDL cholesterol is associated w/ higher risk of heart &amp; artery disease, while high HDL is generally protective. Genetics is a major determinant of what your levels will be; diet has some influence. Treatments include diet, exercise, &amp; drugs including statins, fibrates, binding resins, &amp; recently some fancy biologic drugs. Medical guidelines on who/how to treat are now very detailed

Depends: Cholesterol norms vary depending on the risk factors one has such as the presence of hypertension, diabetes, smoking, family history of heart attack, etc. Knowing that as well as the actual #s for your cholesterol fractions may help better determine whether those are normal in your case or not.

Very good/keep up,,,: This is very good as you've apparently kept your cholesterol from increasing dramatically.  Everything else is in range so if you keep working on that total and do good diet and exercise, you'll be doing everything you can short of meds to keep it under control.  Best of luck.

Need work: Your values are not too bad, but could be much better, especially HDL should be higher. If you are overweight, lost weight.Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco or alcohol in any form.
