If : If it is hot it could be bursitis (inflammed fat pad of elbow area) or there could be an infection involving the joint.  I would rest the joint. Consider helping to control pain with use of an oral non-steroidal antiinflammatory medication (i.e., like motrin).  Ice is also helpful. Frozen bags of peas or corn are especially good for this purpose. If the area of redness and heat continues to expand or there are red streaks our fever, than please go to an er or acute care clinic. If it is not resolving after a week but is not worsening, than please call your doctor.

Concerning: Any middle age male with acute onset non-familiar chest pain and "heartburn"-like symptoms needs an urgent physician evaluation of the heart to rule out heart attack.

Topical salicylate: Topical salicylates such as BenGay can help with pain from sore muscles.  It has nothing to do with heat.

Grandmother's advice: Both of these treatments are wive's tales like the theory that going out in the cold without a jacket causes you to catch a cold.Use a blanket when you feel cold; if you're shivering it's your body's way of generating heat and, if that heat results in a fever, take tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil, it will stop your shivers and start you sweating.Ice works to reduce fever if you're submerged in it.

Follow up with: Normal, healthy people do not have "constant tiredness" without a good reason. One's primary care doctor can look for reasons for fatigue, such as anemia, infection, mental illness, auto-immune disease, thyroid problems, cancer, insomnia, etc... That means seeing the doctor regularly until symptoms resolve, mainly to make sure there is nothing else going on other than "post viral fatigue."

Local anesthetic gel: Ice pack is not a good idea as it will reduce blood flow make drawing blood more difficult.  You should consult your doctor about using Lidocaine gel to numb the skin before needle stick.
