Which part?: The most common reason for this would be carpal tunnel in which case your 1st 3 or 4 fingers would go numb.  Try a carpal tunnel splint at night for a while.  It is possible you might need an injection in your wrist.  See a pmr doctor or orthopedic surgeon.

i have hand numbness & tingling. it feels all swelled up but it's not and the feeling goes up my arm  it keeps me up at night. i'm 46 with no medicals problems other than a few kidney infections throughout life.

How : How is your neck?  Any history of prior injury to your neck?  Compression of a nerve in your neck (from arthritis in the cervical spine or a disc herniation) can cause your symptoms.  And you don't necessarily have to have neck pain in order for a problem in your neck to cause radiating pain ("radiculopathy").

I'd start with either an orthopedic surgeon or a neurologist who can perform some simple nerve tests.   An MRI of your neck would disclose any narrowing between the vertebrae.  Also, try using a thinner pillow when you sleep.

sleeping at night with my arms bent causes hand numbness. try to sleep with my arms straight, usually without success. any suggestions or excersises?

Splints: Flexion of the elbows as wells as wrists as we sleep puts stress on the ulnar and median nerves respectively which contributes to cubital and carpal tunnel.

It is difficult to maintain proper positioning at night without some type of either wrist or elbow splint depending on the nerve involved.

22 yrd old f, history of migraines, new symptoms of  left arm and hand numbness, blurry vision, & sharp head pain waking me up at night--is this bad?

Migraine: If you are having new symptoms that differ from your usual headache pattern, go to the er and be checked.  You may be having a stroke-- at the very least, you will need a complete physical exam, labs, and an imaging study to check things out.

Time: You likely have a neuropraxia of the ulnar nerve which covers the pinky. These nerves take time to heal. Keep trying to move it and also make sure you are not compressing your elbow near the "funny bone' If it goes on see a neurologist

Partially correct: A torn rotator cuff or osteophytes/spurs in the shoulder would restrict your motion, lifting ability and cause pain but not numbness in your hand.  Numbness in your hand can be a pinched nerve in your neck (from a disc or spur) or in your arm or wrist like carpal tunnel syndrome.  See your rehab doctor for a diagnosis and proper treatment to avoid a frozen shoulder, wasted muscles or complete tear.
