why does my back crack when i go lie down?

Back cracking: "cracking" of joints is a normal phenomenon. When you pull on a finger, your knuckles crack. Virtually any of the other joints in your body will do the same thing if you apply enough force. In this case remember that your spine is a collection of complex joint articulations and with motion cracking/clicking is common. It also implies that you are flexible, which is good.

Arthritis issues: Arthritis in general will involve inflammation of vertebral surfaces, and b/c of the "bone to bone " contact, bending or twisting slightly will make the sound described.  Some movements which will occur while reclining are different than keeping erect posture while awake and place articular surfaces in direct contact with arthritic changes in bone, causing the sound.  Spinal fusion may stop this.

It's uncertain.: Sometimes peoples backs are cracking because they tried to make it happen repeatly.
If you didn't do this, it would be helpful to have a consultation to understand why.

Likely: Back strain. Limit your activity and apply warmth or cool packs. If you are able take Tylenol (acetaminophen) arthritis or Ibuprofen as often as recommended. If you fail to get better or have and symptoms of extremity pain or weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control, be seen. All the best and gentle activity only.

sometimes when i'm sitting, i feel my back crack. it feels like some of my vertebrae shift slightly. is this normal and could it  reduce height?

Normal: Like cracking your knuckles, the spine has joints that can have friction that causes noise as they try to glide past each other. So long as not assiciated with pain (usually feels somewhat good!) you arent changing the overall position of the vertebrae.

i fell on the stair case sraight on my back i felt my back crack since then i have a burning sensation on my left side and can't hardly walk  ?

Go see your doc!: Back injuries leading to change in sensation and inability to walk need to be evaluated. Go see your doc for a complete evaluation. Go to the emergency department if you can't control your bladder or can't walk due to muscle weakness, not just pain. Numbness in your crotch area is also a really bad sign and needs to be evaluated emergently.

Be seen: I would not hesitate to be seen.  An exam and appropriate studies will likely yield the correct cause of your pain, and at that point treatment options can be discussed.

Many Possibilities: Depending on how long it's been going on, i would consider an evaluation by a spine specialist.  Sometimes it could be a muscle imbalance, early onset arthritis or scoliosis.  Also could be a pinched nerve/herniated disc.  Either way it might be good to figure it out and get appropriate treatment.

Unlikely...: If your only symptom is "back cracking", then it is unlikely that the cause is cancer, especially if you have no personal history of cancer.  Pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and other symptoms in association with back problems would be more concerning.  If you are worried about cancer and/or back trouble, please see a  primary care doc and give all of your symptoms.  Hope that this helps.
