When to worry: Hernias can be harmless apart from mild discomfort, but can cause serious problems if a piece of intestine gets "stuck" in the muscle weakness.  If you have discomfort with a known hernia, redness/swelling/severe pain are major danger signs, but when in doubt, visit your GP to examine the hernia physically and determine your risk.
Avoiding constipation, straining and maintaining normal weight =NB!

Go to surgeon: You need to follow through with a surgeon visit as a peri umbilical hernia indicates that there is usually a loop of intestine underneath that protrusion that can get trapped and it needs to be repaired.

Umbilical Hernia?: Intolerable abdominal pain is an emergency.  When ever a doctor hears this complaint it is either get to my clinic right now or go to the emergency room.  This forum is great, but you need to be seen in person today.

: There are too many possible causes to know from the minimal information you provide. If you have had similar symptoms with IBS, that's obviously a likely possibility. Otherwise, contact your doctor or get seen soon. Any new or unexplained abdominal pain should be professionally evaluated. If the pain is severe, or if other symptoms like fever, blood in stools, etc, get care ASAP. Good luck.
