why do your eyes get red when you cry?

Red eyes: This is actually a very good question and it would seem like the answer would be simple and straight forward.  The most likely cause is related to a valsalva maneuver.  When we cry, we often hold our breath somewhat and this retards the flow of blood into the lungs and increases back pressure on the venous side of our circulation.  This causes blood vessels to be engorged, including the eye.

Eye drops: As long as redness of eyes is related to crying only (and not connected with allergies, glaucoma etc), you may try any of the otc decongestant eye drops on an "as needed" basis. Delve deeper to find out why you are crying and then hiding it frequently :).

my inner corner of my eyes have been red for about 2 weeks. it gets better after a few days pass but if i cry they just get back to how they were.

Requires exam: and treatment of infection or inflammation of the inner canthus.  Avoid OTC eye drops and see your physician asap.

: The pressure change created by crying or vomiting can break small capillaries near the skin surface around the eyes or other areas with thin skin. The pressure by masks may do this also. I don't assume anything bad when this happens.

i was crying for hours last night and my eyes were bloodshot red after finding out i was cheated on. the next day my eyes are very puffy. how do i get rid of it? will it go away on its own. im not used to puffy swollen looking eyes. they dont hurt?

: It will go away on its own but it will take some time-likely a few hours. You can try putting some wet teabags on your eyes while closed. This tends to absorb the puffiness so your eyes will look less swollen faster. Sorry you were cheated on and I hope you feel better real soon!

my son , 2 years 4 months has been getting flash skin reactions that we dont know what is causing it. we see a pattern of crying and rubbing eyes as minutes after that he has a red blotchy patch appearance on his face. he also get it on his legs.

Urticarial rash?: An allergic reaction is possible. Provide children's Benadryl as directed by your physician or pharmacist for three days. If the reaction involves respiratory symptoms, drooling or vomiting, please see acute care right away. His ocular irritation may be due to an allergic reaction.  Rinse eyes with ocular saline. Avoid contact with common allergens, pets, smoke and any food triggers.

Time...........: The red spots under your eyes probably occurred as a result of the episode of vomiting. These are small blood vessels that have ruptured and will heal--as any bruise does over the next few days to week or two.

: Yes. If these are as expected they are called by various names "coughing" or "vomiting" petechiae, where the tiny capillaries just beneath the skin break &amp; bleed a little.  This effects the skin of the head almost exclusively and this does not mean there is anything bad going on with your body. They self heal.
