Hicupps: Hicupps, are caused by sudden contractions of the diaphragm, which results from irritation of the nerve that controls that muscle function.This nerve runs close to the esophagus(food pipe), you propably get the hiccups when you drink cold liquids, at a fast pace.Another cause can be seen in people who has gastric reflux, or hiatal hernia.

eat less and no spices will help
if nausea and you can vomit will help too
vomit till stomoch is completely mpty
yoga recommends drinking warm water several glasses and putting a finger in throat to make you vomit till stomoch is totally empty  This gives a lot of releif

You might be : Suffering from obstructive sleep apnea.  This is a condition where you stop breathing for a few minutes, then gasp for breath when you become hypoxic.  This gasp might be what your wife thinks is hiccoughing.  Try sleeping on your side,  not supine.  If that doesn't help, see if your doctor can refer you for a sleep study.
