Three possibilities: It could be either rheumatoid or osteo arthritis. If the stiffness decreases in the first hour, think more osteo, if it takes a few hours, may be rheumatoid. Discuss with your physician. The third possibility, while a little less likely, is carpal tunnel syndrome. This often can first present after sleeping (flexed wrists) and as stiffness and pain in the morning. Less likely, but possible.

Sleeping on arm?: Are you sleeping on the same side as your symptoms? Positioning during sleep can cause compression on the shoulder, arm, and/or wrist, which can possibly lead to feelings of numbness in the hands. Sleep position : The symptoms may be related to your neck &amp; back position during sleep which could be causing some compression of a neck nerve. If the symptoms always resolve when you get up that is less worrisome than if they persist.  A pillow that keeps your neck curved @ night may help, plus stretching exercises for the neck. Poss carpal tunnel.: Numbness in fingers in AM is suggestive of carpal tunnel syndrome where there is compression of the nerves at the wrist.  Try wearing a wrist brace at night that keeps the hand extended. Also, there are exercises for carpal tunnel that stretch the nerve and tendons.

Hand pain: I do not know how old you are.  However pain in hands would make me consider Carpal tunnel.  Thyroid problem another thought or some type of problem causing increased fluid retention.  See your provider.

May be arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is an important cause of morning stiffness and joint swelling and pain. If you have a family history of this, you are more likely to get it. If you are otherwise healthy, you can try taking Aleve (naproxen) or motrin, though Aleve (naproxen) is safer for your heart. You also ought to be tested, because if you have this, you can benefit from meds that change the course of the disease. See your doc.

Strain?: You could have strain/sprain ligaments or tendon, arthritis, inflammation etc.
Any injuries?
Try warm soaks and some over the counter advil(if no allergies)

AM stiffness: This is a common symptom in people who have arthritis of different kinds. Impossible to say what kind without an exam. For  most people the stiffness works itself out after a little while. Hot showers or baths help. Gentle opening and closing of the fingers usually helps.  Can be a nuisance but usually not much can be done about it.
