i have hypothyroidism and take levothyroxine daily. my tsh has increased to 3.42 and i am gaining weight and tired a lot. should  i increase dosage?

See below: Hi, TSH and T4 in hypothyroidism should be measured every 3 months, so the hormone is well adjusted, however this has to be done by your endocrinologist so I recommend paying a visit and getting your dose adjusted by him/ her, in this visit you should tell her/him about your increased weight and any other signs or symptoms you’ve been having.

Paradoxical: Generally one gains weight with hypothyroidism and usually loses that weight gain with treatment with levothyroxine. As long as your TSH is in normal range and your appetite and food intake are normal for you, your current weight should be stable.

been taking levothyroxine 137 mg everyday for almost two years. constantly gaining weight - +100 lbs since i had my thyroid removed, easily irritated, no sex drive. every doctor tells me that my levels are fine. i feel like i'm going insane?

: Because Levothyroxine is a hormone and it interacts with other hormonal systems (reproductive hormones, adrenal hormones, insulin/cortisol), a thorough evaluation is warranted. Talk to your Endocrinologist and request a full hormone workup including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, insulin and cortisol. Your symptoms are probably due to problems with the other hormones.

Not thyroid.: If your TSH is 0.4 you are on the right dose of levothyroxine.  Continued weight gain and tiredness are likely due to something else.  Some physicians might measure your free T3 (liothyronine) / free T4 and consider boosting your dose or supplementing you, but i think you have another issue. Regular exercise, sleep and a good diet.

???: Something doesn't make sense.  Maybe the numbers are on wrong or the story is not clear.  A normal TSH and and elevated t4.  And levothyeoxine was started. Re enter the question with more info.  Have you been on thyroid meds?  Do you have a diagnosis of hypothyroid.  I do not recommend using thyroid meds to lose weight!

Check RT3: Check free T3 and reverse t3. Very important to check reverse t3. Ft3 should be in upper range and rt3 in lower range. If your ratio is off, you may need Armour Thyroid or t3, and synthroid (thyroxine) would be the wrong med for you.

Levothyroxin ovrdose: Yes it will, but it can also make you sick.It can cause palpitation, pounding heartbeat, tremors, chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, leg cramps, diarrhea, and seizures
so take it in prescribed dose and under medical supervision.

Not a good idea: A high dose of thyroid will increase your metabolic rate, but also your appetite. Will also raise your heart rate, give palpitations, stress your heart, make you hot all the time, anxious, and much more.  In the medical field, this would be a clear misuse of the medication.

i take 50 mg of levothyroxine  but my weight creeping up and up even with diet and excercise. do i need to take more dose to higher my metabolism ?

No: Your dose of thyroid medication should be adjusted based on your lab tests.  Your weight may or may not be related to your thyroid level.  To loose weight you will need to burn off more calories than you take in. Take a close look at your activity level and total calorie intake.  A good start is to keep intake below 1500 calories
