Fertility testing: If you have been trying for 12 months or more without success then formal fertility testing is needed. Schedule a visit with fertility specialist. 3 basic tests are needed. 1. Ovulation testing 2. A semen analysis 3. An HSG Xray to make sure the tubes are open.

Can take 1-9 months: With a 28-day cycle, ovulation happens about day 14.  That is day 14 counting from the beginning of a period (first day of bleeding is day 1).  That is also known as 14 days after LMP, which means Last Menstrual Period. If wanting a baby, have sex 1-2 times a day starting on day 9, for a full 9 days... and enjoy those days, without thinking about pregnancy, babies nor anything related to cycles.

Know your cycle: The average cycle pattern is 28 days with ovulation occurring around day 14. You are most fertile shortly before ovulation and this time should be avoided to prevent pregnancy. Consider the number of days between your cycles. A good rule is to assume you will ovulate 14 days after the first day of your last cycle. Also, you can use a condom at anytime to prevent pregnancy and stds.

Menstrual cycles: Is the 21-24 day cycle length from the beginning of one cycle to the beginning of the other or from the end to the beginning. If it is the former, then that would be a short cycle and you should see a doctor to find out why it is short.  If it is the latter and your cycle lasts 5-6 days, then it would be a normal 26 - 30 day cycle length.

Menses irregular: With a menstrual cycle of between 30-45 days, there are therefore irregular ovulations.  It is better, if not attempting pregnancy, to begin a low dose birth control administration, so that increased estrogen levels produced in the longer of the times between periods does not affect the uterine lining adversely.  Ask your gyn provider to discuss pros and cons with you.

Menses: Irregular menses needs to be evaluated by a doctor. There can be numerous reasons for not having regular menses. When not pregnant, the body turns off the menstrual cycles during times of stress. Stress can be physical, emotional or structural. Your doctor will be able to get to the source of the problem.
