Gastroenterologist: You're correct that a gastroenterologist would be the best type of physician to see.  And there are many excellent ones all over the us.  I don't know that anyone claims to be the best in the usa, though.  Have you had swallowing studies, and upper GI endoscopy? PCP: Neither of those rankings determine whose the best in their field.  Health tap is a game for doctors and visitors, as stated on their website.  Health grades is not recognized by any medical specialty as a legitimate rating site because anyone (including the doctor him or herself) can rate themselves. Basics: Probiotics are just colonies of friendly germs that help your gut function better. They are found naturally in unpasteurized yoghurt &amp; sold in capsule form over the counter. Most consider daily use, taken at whatever time  you want it a good plan.  There are many on the market. I find little difference in the available products.

a gastroenterologist removes polyps during a colonoscopy if they are present. at that same time, can he take a biopsy of a hardened area at the prostate? or, best to do at other time? the latter i would prefer. can i ask the md to wait?

: No, a gastroenterologist cannot technically do a prostate biopsy during a colonoscopy. An urologist will be needed to weigh in and  eventually proceed with an ultrasound assisted prostate biopsy if needed.

: General surgeon. In the meantime increase your intake of fiber and water to keep your stool soft. You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods.

Gastroenterology: Average length of time is four years of medical school, three or four years of internal medicine residency, and three or four years of G.I. Fellowship. I personally did 11 years altogether. It's a rewarding field. Go for it if you are interested.
