: This can indicate inflammation in the urethra or prostate gland. If you have been at risk for STDs (multiple sex partners, new ones, or partner who has had sex with others), you might have chlamydia, nongonococcal urethritis, or (much less likely) gonorrhea. Or you might have prostatitis. See your doctor.

Mucous: What you're seeing is probably mucous.    The urinary tract has glands to secrete mucous for lubrication.    This can be seen as white strands in the urine from time to time.

Possible UTI: Most likely cause of symptoms is a urinary tract infection. Suggest urinalysis which if positive should be followed by urine culture to identify bacteria responsible & antibiotic  prescription from your doctor. Should see your doctor in any case whether or or not a uti.

See answer: Probable mucus threads. In small amounts, often normal and sometimes more or less visible depending on the pH or concentration of the urine. May also be commonly seen with asymptomatic bacteriuria (bacterial colonization of urine) or contamination of urine with vaginal secretions especially if around the time of ovulation or with vaginal infection/irrigation. Urinalysis and urine culture helpful.

over the last year i have had mucus strings in urine. heavier in the morning and fewer as the day progresses. three naat urine tests show negative for gonorrhea and chlamidia. any ideas on what could be causing this?

: I assume there is no mixture of your urine with bowel movements.I assume you have no symptoms of urinary burning,frequency,or urgency.  Tiny amounts of mucus in urine is usually not significant but large amounts, especially with an odor, is different. A urinalysis with microscopic examination would give an idea of how much mucus is present&amp;see if pus cells are present. ?Had culture ?Saw urologist.

Non-gonococcal : Non-gonococcal urethritis is usually due to higher forms of bacteria which do not have a cell wall, and as such are going to be resistant to treatment with agents that have their affects on cell wall synthesis (like ceftriaxone).  This should be treated with other drugs. Cannot diagnose what you have, but see a urologist and get treated appropriately.

Urine Norms: Urine is not  oily. If you feel your's is oily then you need to get to your family clinic. This is a very unique question and is not the norm for urine symptoms.
