White Spot: A white spot (or any colored spot/lesion) should always be seen by a dentist who can examine it. There are simple techniques; i.e. A simple brush biopsy, that can be performed to determine the cellular makeup of the lesion. It's always good to have a peace of mind that the lesion is something as simple as scar tissue....Etc. It is fairly cheap with or without insurance ~ $250 without any insurance.

Leukoplakia: Is a white or gray patch that develops anywhere on the inside of the mouth. It is caused by excess cell growth of the lining of the mouth. It typically is not sensitive or painful. Leukoplakia generally is harmless, but there is a risk that it can become cancerous. To be certain that a spot is not a threat see your dentist.

my immediate denture is causing a white spot on my gum and hurts really bad. i can't get them adjusted till monday. what do i do?

See your surgeon: You must leave the dentures in your mouth. Swelling may happen and you may not be able to get the dentures back in your mouth. The dentures should only be removed for cleaning after each meal and at bedtime. Take NSAID OTC or Tylenol (acetaminophen) and see your surgeon for adjustment ASAP.

Doubtful: Anesthetic needles do not fracture in that manner. It may be a small piece of tooth, part of a broken filling, or the sharp edge of the tooth socket. Please see the dentist who treated you to determine what this is and have it treated. No need to guess.

During : During routine dental examinations and oral cancer screening is usually performed.  Typically we are looking for lumps, bumps, ulcers, and colored lesions (white, red, blue).  Any change from normal is typically reevaluated in 7 to 10 days because that is the normal healing time for oral lesions.  If the lesion persists then a biopsy is recommended so that the tissue can be closely examined to determine its nature. White lesions in the mouth can range from a reaction to trauma to oral cancer, but without a tissue diagnosis your dentist cannot tell what the change.  Most white lesions in a patient a little risk for cancer are benign and do not require treatment, but they all have to be evaluated.

White spot: May be aphthous ulcer, burn, scratch, or hundreds of other possibilities.  You can wait about 10 days and see if it heals, or call your Dentist for an examination, differential diagnosis, and treatment or observation.
