i have had excessive dry mouth and white patches on the side of my tongue for almost a week now. what do i do.

See your PCP: There are many causes of dry mouth (xerostomia) including: mouth breathing, OSA, certain medications, smoking and systemic illnesses (diabetes). Some causes are easily correctable, others are more difficult to treat. Taking good history may be helpful to find the cause and can be of significant value when treating dry mouth symptoms.

Could be: Pigment or a large vein. Generally nothing to worry about however i would have my dentist check it to be on the safe side as i cannot diagnose inn this medium.

See your dentist : It may be due to pigmentation from a foreign body, such as silver filling from the tooth.  It can be a superficial vein that appears to be dark blue or even black. It may be pigmentation especially if you have dark complexion. It could be something more serious like melanoma, a type of cancer. I would recommend seeing your ddentist for evaluation and treatment.

without seeing this I have two thoughts. The most common lesion with a white border, swelling and pain may actually be a cold sore, which is usually the herpes simplex.

Other than that it may also be a bite injury but usually the patient will remember the bite.

: There is a condition called erythemia migrans, or geographic tongue, The cause is obscure but it does produce the symptoms from which you are complaining. May I suggest thatbyou see your dentist immediately , while you have the symptoms and ask his opinion.

Tongue: You should see a dentist or oral surgeon to have this red patch checked.  This is something that needs to be seen and can't be answered in this forum.  There are many possibilities as to what it could be.  Even though you don't have pain it could be serious so get this checked asap.

Don't freak out: Most likely temporary malady. Might be canker sores, very common , source not known, worse during period of stress. Could be one or more of your taste buds is inflamed or irritated,which can swell and form a painful bump on your tongue. Maintain good oral hygiene and monitor and they most likely will resolve on there own.

Only seek medical attention if they persist or worsen &gt;7-10 days.

could this be leukoplakia? i've noticed a small white patch on the left side of my tongue. it doesn't hurt at all, but it kind of has me worried.

I : I would recommend first exam by your general dentist. Usually if the white lesion stays for more than a week e general dentist will refer you to an oral surgeon or oral medicine specialist for a biopsy. You might be biting your tongue and the dentist might smooth the sharp cusps to check if that helps.In any case see you dentist asap first.
