You're fine: Normal WBC. I trust lymphocyte and neutrophil counts were fine also. Take the prenisone for the poison ivy only if it's so bad you can't sleep otherwise. We're glad to help.

WBCs: A 6.3 WBC is right in the very middle of a normal range. There is nothing abnormal about this number.

my white blood cell count was 1.6. should i be very concerned about this and am i at risk of getting sick?

Accepted Answer

Take normal: precautions including practicing good hand hygiene.  Though your total count is still above 1.0, it would be reasonable to avoid un-cooked foods (salads/vegetables in particular) and people who are currently ill.  Because your WBC count isn't 'normal' you are at more of a risk for infection than the general public - but not so severely immunosuppressed that you need to stress over it.

my white blood cell count dropped from 6.1 in november to 4.2 today (5 months later). is this decrease concerning, even though it's still within normal range?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, both counts are within normal limits. Counts can change due to intercurrent infections.

ER visit: You didn't say what symptoms caused you to  seek emergency care in the first place, and that's a very important piece of information.  Your white count is slightly elevated, which can come from infection, inflammation, medications, or bone marrow issues. i have a white blood cell count of 3.6, and absolute neutrophil of 1354... all other numbers in bloodwork are in normal range. any reason for alarm ?

No: In the absence of moth sores or recurrent infections no need to work up a mildly low neutrophil count.  This is very common in african americans and those of northern european ancestry.

Rare rarely happens: There to my knowledge no family linkage for leukemia and a lowish white count as listed is often due to other common events ( although you didn't give much to  go on).I think you need to get through this numbing period whatever way you can.Instead of more tests, a heartfelt discussion of your concern with the doc that ordered the test may be a better approach.If needed it would get done.

Probably Not: Not really, but the context of whu these tests were done is important.Tha numbers are not really concerning otherwise.

how long can someone have a uti and not know it? also would it show up on their bloodwork as having a high white blood cell count if they had it for 6 months?

: Subclinical cystitis or asymptomatic cystitis or chronic cystitis or asymptomatic bacteriuria rarely causes leukocytosis (high white cell count). Other causes of leukocytosis should be in the differential diagnosis. Good luck.
