One's primary care doctor can review the big picture and decide if these numbers are good, bad, or neutral. For example, one might want to know if the numbers were higher or lower last week or last month. Of course, an important question is why was a blood test done.

my white blood cell count was 1.6. should i be very concerned about this and am i at risk of getting sick?

Accepted Answer

Take normal: precautions including practicing good hand hygiene.  Though your total count is still above 1.0, it would be reasonable to avoid un-cooked foods (salads/vegetables in particular) and people who are currently ill.  Because your WBC count isn't 'normal' you are at more of a risk for infection than the general public - but not so severely immunosuppressed that you need to stress over it.

is white blood cell count 16.1 high, or is it super high? i am male 59 years old.

High: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your count higher than the upper limit of normal but not super-high.  You need to consult with your doctor is it may require investigation.

if i haven't had an outbreak of hsv2 in 7 months would it still cause my white blood cell count to be 1 point above normal? or most likely not ?

No: Unlikely there is any relationship between the two. Regardless,a 1 pointy increase in the abc is insignificant

Need further eval: An elevated wbc, leukocytosis, is frequently a sign of inflammatory response most likely with a response to infection. Further information is required to help categorize it.  Go over your results with your primary care. If needed a hematology consult may assist further. Best wishes.

my white blood cell count dropped from 6.1 in november to 4.2 today (5 months later). is this decrease concerning, even though it's still within normal range?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, both counts are within normal limits. Counts can change due to intercurrent infections.

You're fine: Normal WBC. I trust lymphocyte and neutrophil counts were fine also. Take the prenisone for the poison ivy only if it's so bad you can't sleep otherwise. We're glad to help.

Have you asked?: My first question to you is "Have you asked your doctor?"  and, if so, have you asked "Is this a problem"?"  My best advice is to ask your doctor these questions.  If your WBC count has remained stable for 5 years and you don't have any progressive symptoms, there's an excellent chance that the problem hasn't been addressed simply because there isn't a problem.  That certainly is my hope for you!

hi i just did a medical for a visa application and one of my result show i have a low white blood cell count cause i had an infection what can i do to involve my white blood cell count immediately?

How low?: Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either side. White counts in particular fluctuate wildly. If you are WAY down in either lymphocytes or neutrophils, you've got a lot more to worry about than just your Visa, because you're seriously sick. Otherwise, your physician can handle this -- usually you'll be normal next time. Best wishes.
