i have very painful, hot feeling shins that even hurt when lying down at night. at 92 i expect to experience some discomfort but i do not know how to ease this pain although a ice-cold gel helps a little?

: I would assume the shin and skin are completely normal in appearance. Are you diabetic or having other medical illnesses? The symptom could be neuropathic pain due to neuropathy.

Take Tylenol (acetaminophen) or motr: You can take over the counter pain killer like tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin .Consult your doctor to find the cause of the pain in the shin for long term relief.

Inside or out?: Depending on location, it could be an impingement of the common peroneal nerve if you're lying down on the outside of your leg.  On the inside, could be shin splints, anterior compartment syndrome, stress fracture, etc.

: I guess we can rule out trauma or overuse from workouts. Vein causes would involve the calves &amp; not shins.   I've seen this symptom of the front of the lower legs aching while lying in bed. If there's no swelling,discoloration, tenderness or increased pain on motion,I attribute this symptom to the day's activities at work or around the house or it may be a variant of the restless leg syndrome.

Shin splints: This could be shin splints if it is mostly in the front along the bone with small amount radiating into the muscle. If the majority of pain is in the muscle, this could be other things. A strain or injury could cause this. Any past injuries to that calf? Something more concerning could be compartment syndrome.  While this is rare, if the pain gets a lot worse, go to the er as it can be serious.

L4 radiculitis: You are describing the L4 dermatome.  If this is occurring on one side, it is likely from a disc injury affecting the L4 nerve root.  If on both sides, may be from acquired spinal stenosis such as from a spondylolisthesis. 
Iliotibial band syndrome would be another consideration. 
Most importantly, if there are neurological issues (ie weakness, bladder control probs) then this needs urgent eval.

Be seen: I would be seen.  An exam and appropriate studies will usually determine the cause.   Ligamentous injuries, such as an injury to the ACL can cause  an unstable knee.  If you are having a lot of trouble with pain running down your leg, it could also be coming from your back.  In severe cases pinched nerves in the back can cause weakness in the muscles around the knee making it less stable.

i fell down d stairs.i have a light black stain on my shin.its around 2&1/2 inches.it doesn't hurt but its hard.its been there for around a year now?

Skin tinting: May just be where blood was from the bruise and that can tint the skin if you have thin skin. Check with a dermatologist just to be sure.
