Depends: Esophageal varices are a complication of portal hypertension, a condition where the pressure in the vascular system of the GI tract becomes very elevated, usually due to liver disease.  The greatest risk of having varices is life-threatening bleeding. If you have never bled before, a medication called Nadolol is effective to prevent bleeding. Otherwise, endoscopic banding is the best approach.

Variety of things: Esophageal varices are dilated veins that form when the liver is damaged. When the liver is scarred blood  flow "backs up" into nereby veins like those in the esophagus, they can then bleed. Therapy is aimed at lowering the bleeding risk. Medicines which lower the pressure in the veins ( beta blockers, nitrates) can help. So can procedures that divert blood flow from the liver ( "tips".

Multiple: Varices can be treated with medications like beta blockers to reduce venous pressures, direct ligation of the veins, systemic shunts to reduce blood flow and pressure in the liver and portal vein system. The ultimate treatment in select cases is a liver transplant. Need to work with a hematologist and GI specialist and at times a GI surgeon.

Portal hypertension: This is most commonly due to cirrhosis of the liver and must be dealt with by a hepatologist, gastroenterologist or general surgeon familiar with the area of practice.  Knowing the etiology of this would also be helpful.  The esohagitis at the gej may be due to reflux.

Sclerotherapy (injecting a substance that will cause obliteration of a varix) is another option, but is less frequently used. Anti-acid therapy with acid reducers is added as well.
