It Depends: It depends on what the tamoxifen is being used to treat. If used to treat breast cancer, it is mostly prescribed by an oncologist. However, tamoxifen can also be used as treatment for severe breast pain/fibrocystic disease, or for breast cancer prevention. In those cases a primary care physician, general surgeon, or gynecologist may prescribe it.

Yes, but...: I would recommend you see a medical oncologist regarding this medication.   These types of physicians prescribe tamoxifen frequently and are most familiar with its use and side effects.  So if you encounter a side effect, they will know what to do.

Increases fertility: Tamoxifen will increase your fsh and lh wihich will increase your fertility. That increases the chances that your IUI will be successful. Be aware that if you are a woman, you will likely get some pretty nasty menopausal symptoms while you are taking taxmoxifen. Once you get pregnant, you need to stop taking it. Discuss all of this with your doctor!

Be discerning: DMSO is an industrial solvent that has been used  in mostly-bogus cancer treatment by "independent thinkers"; lately some related molecules have attracted some interest. Tamoxifen has been an established treatment for hormone-sensitive cancers for decades.

my doctor switched me from clomid (clomiphene) to tamoxifen. is there the same increased chance for multiples with the tamoxifen?

Difficult to tell: Tamoxifen works very similarly to clomid (clomiphene). Because there is not a lot of published research on tamoxifen, it is difficult to compare the multiple birth rates. If you are 41 you indicated above, it is not a bad idea to see  a specialist and consider more potent medications. Multiple births are not particularly common in 41 year olds, but pregnancy rates are lower.

if taking meds that can cause clots (clomid/tamoxifen/arimidex), as a previous sufferer of a p.e, could a doctor put me on warfarin to minimise risk?

Depends : Depends on underlying cause of pe. Warfarin would not be an option though when trying to conceive. Heparin or low molecular weight Heparin would be safer for embryos.

You should : Should follow your doctor(s) advise , benefits out weigh the few minor set backs . If you are not happy with advise take a second opinion your doctor will encourage it . Please do not stop the medication.

Tamoxifen : Not sure why your estrogen level is being checked. Tamoxifen is used in specific conditions such as Breast Cancer prevent or adjuvant treatment of estrogen sensitive Breast cancer. Tamoxifen does not decrease estrogen level. It reduces the activity of estrogen.

i'm 77, a male, diagnosed with gynecomastia, (non-cancerous, tender lump size of walnut under one nipple).   doctor wants to start tamoxifen.  is this necessary?

Talk to doctor more: You are a 77 year old male who has gynecomastia.  Your doctor wants to start tamoxifen but you do not have breast cancer.  Whenever you have a new diagnosis make sure you spend the time to discuss with your doctor the reason for any new medication.  Also talk with your pharmacist regarding interactions of medications.  If you are uncomfortable seek a second opinion before starting.

i had a lumpectomy for breast cancer and also had chemotherapy as it was grade 3. now, the doctors want me to have radiations and take tamoxifen, but i'm fed up with the treatment. what should i do?

Keep going: Congrats for finishing chemo!  please do not stop now.  If you had a lumpectomy, then you need to get radiation to help decrease your chance of the cancer coming back in the lumpectony area.  If you skip rad, you recurrence rate is 30%.  If you do not want to get the rad, then you should get a mastectomy.  The rad is not as bad as chemo and only takes 7-8 weeks.  Good luck!
