Depends: These are both effective crown materials.  Porcelain is usually chosen for the front of the mouth as it is more cosmetically pleasing.  However it consts more to fabricate.  Gold is a little easier to make but shows, so it  is used farther back in the mouth.  As the cost of god increases, it is possible that the cost of these two crowns may equalize.

Two issues here: There are two factors to consider when answering this question: 1-Strength of crown: a gold crown cannot break; any one with a ceramic surface can break although very small percentage. 2- Any tooth with a crown can decay around margins if poor oral hygiene or high sugar or acid intake.  Each type of crown has advantages and disadvantages. Speak to your own dentist as to which is best for you.

Good functional opt: Gold is a wonderful material to fabricate a posterior crown , especially for a grinder! The pros are the way it will function &amp; wear against the opposing arch, no risk of breakage and excellent marginal integrity &amp; fit. The major con is the esthetics, but not a big deal on a posterior tooth. Today, Zirconium milled crowns are supposed to offer all the pros of gold, but with esthetics.

High Noble Metal: The material used should be the same throughout the restoration. It could be a reflection that makes it appear darker. If a fresh silver filling has come in contact with the gold metal, a transfer of color can occur. Your best bet is to have your restorative dentist take a look.

Depends on the need: The types of materials that i chose for my patient is dependent on the occlusion (bite) the types of dental material or natural tooth on the opposing tooth structure and the force of the bite. Any and all of those choices and their combination could be right.

Better?: Better is a subjective term. Better in what way? Each has pros and cons. If a any type of crown was universally better, it would be the only one used. Gold crowns cannot break and are softer and kinder to the opposing teeth. Zirconia crowns are strong but are more esthetic. This is a subject best discussed with your dentist who is most familiar with your specific situation.

Yes, if...: Very few gold alloys have nickle. To be sure, have your dentist check with his lab, and obtain a sticker that details alloy content.

Nickle-chromium alloys are the ones you must watch out for. Most silver-palladium and gold-palladium mixes are free of nickle.
