It depends: In head to head studies, antidepressants generally work equally well. The choice of antidepressant really depends on the side effects that the person may have or be willing to tolerate. In ocd, most doctors use either fluvoxamine or clomipramine because they work the strongest on serotonin receptors. But other antidepressants have been known to help too.

Several: I've seen many benefit from effexor, (venlafaxine) celexa, lexapro, paxil, and others.Some may also need intermittent or scheduled benzodiazepines.  I've had long-lasting success with classical homeopathy too -- especially when people are so sensitive to pharmaceuticals they just can't take them, or they don't work. Talk with your doctor about your own case; you can arrive at a plan that helps you.

i am going to be switching antidepressants for generalized anxiety disorder. need advice!?

BuSpar (buspirone) or antidepres: The non- addictive medications include Buspirone and some of the antidepressants including Paxil (paroxetine) (i usually prescribe pexeva), effexorxr, lexapro, and hydroxyzine. Gabapentin and Pregabalin are used in treatment resistant situations but are not specifically approved for gad. The bemzodiazepines are used as well as triazolo benzodiaepines, but all carry the risk of addiction. I will leave it to my colleagues to comment on the psychotherapy of generalized anxiety disorder. There are also not medicinal herbal treatments that can be used and i'm sure that my colleagues will comment on those as well.

No: Combination can cause serotonin syndrome. Suggest discuss with GP and consider psychiatrist consult.

Eyes: Unfortunately they all have a drying effect on the eyes, nose, mouth and throat

Yes: Should not be a problem, although too much could provoke anxiety.

Certain ones: In my practice and with my patients with various anxiety disorders, i often find the tricyclic antidepressant nortriptyline to be quite beneficial. Some doctors who did not receive their training until the 90s, may not feel comfortable prescribing some of the older medications.

Norepinephrine: Tricyclics typically work on more receptors than the ssris, which target serotonin. Some people find that their particular depression or anxiety symptoms respond better to medications that work on norepinephrine or acetyocholine.

In general: Lexapro, (escitalopram)Viibryd, Brintellix, but there's no pat answer because one person may do great on a med that someone else can't tolerate or finds useless--best indicator is if someone in your biological/genetic family is doing great on a drug chances are you will also
