It was used as a check that women were virgins on their wedding night but that is flawed logic as the hymen can be broken innocently before marriage by certain positions or activities like bicycling. Otherwise you could go to Google Images to see the various types of hymens. You can use a mirror or your iPhone to compare your own.
An intact hymen is a sign of virginity, but a hymen can break from sports, gymnastics or horseback riding. Even if your hymen breaks you are still a virgin if you haven't had sex.

Which means that they are partially open. If you are seeing your periods, then it is perforate. Once you have intercourse, most hymens will tear to become normal.
