18-24 months: Very low birth weight babies (under 3 pounds 5 ounces), may take 24 months to reach normal length, but usually remain relatively thin. Low birth weight babies (3 pounds 6 ounces to 5 pounds 8 ounces) will usually catch up by 18 months.

See Dr., then eat...: If one is truly underweight (based on height, family background, and body type), a Dr. can evaluate for a hormonal, digestive, or other disorder. If no medical cause is found, then one can add weight by eating more calories of nutritious foods, while also doing weight-training to increase muscle. Proteins:  egg white, chicken breast, salmon,...  Better fats: olive oil, peanuts, almonds, tofu,...

Needs more calories: You haven't mentioned how premature was your baby,but my guess he was born at 31-32 weeks gestation,at 1.67 kgs,now at age 7 months he is 3.5 kgs,doubled his birth weight,but still needs more,hope his other developmental milestones are fine.Usually premature babies catch up with normal growth after 2-3 months,I am afraid breastfeeding alone isn't enough,he needs more nutrition,see his doctor

Might be delayed: Each baby reaches the developmental milestones at their own pace.  Preemies can lag behind infants of the same age, but often catch up within the first to second year of life.
Every baby's developmental curve is different.  Remember, it's not a race.  Enjoy each stage as it happens.

Very unlikely: A 31-weeker who had no complications and has been normal to age two years, can be looked upon as a normal person just like the full term kids.  We are all human, so there is no perfect child.  Any future problems are likely due to being a human, and not due to being a 31-weeker.

can premature women that were born at 51/2 months themselves. have a normal healthy pregnancy? or will i have increased risks because i was a preemie?

No Worries...: Just because you were a preemie does not mean that you will have preemie babies.  Babies are born prematurely for all sorts of reasons.  Even the healthiest of women can have an early delivery of a newborn.  If you have a congenital or genetic condition that predisposes you to difficult pregnancies you should discuss this with your health care provider.

my preemie left the hospital four months ago @ 4lb13oz. is now 14lb 11oz at 4mo 3wks. is this an acceptable weight gain?

Accepted Answer

Yes: It sounds like your baby has done some great catch-up growth. Most term babies will gain about a 7-8 oz a week for the first 4 months, and then slow down a bit after that to about 4 oz a week.

my 33 weeker preemie is 3 weeks plus old now. she grunts a lot while sleeping or eating land turns red like shes in pain or something. is it normal

Yes: She would likely do the same if born at term.Babies make a lot of odd noises in various stages of sleep or alertness.As long as she is gradually gaining weight and maintaining a good feeding pattern she is likely fine. Poor feeding is one of the early signs of what may be a problem.

Already born: your child will have 2 ages for a while, the chronological age, actual age since birth, and the corrected or adjusted age, in other words the age if the child was born at full term, 40 weeks,  so in your case simply subtract 15 weeks from your child's chronological age to get her corrected age, she won't be a newborn any more, the newborn period is the first four weeks of life regardless,

is it normal for a 28 weeks preemie to pass meconium again at 5 weeks old after passing normal stools? she passed meconium after birth for a few days

Accepted Answer

No: Meconium is a mixture of bile,hair, digested cellular debris,etc. that sits within the fully formed bowel and passes within the first days after birth. It never passes again. If your kid is passing dark black stools at 5 weeks it is abnormal and needs to be evaluated by a physician.
