A 4-month-should goo and coo " in sync" with mom, a 6-month-old should raise his arms to be picked up, a 9-month old should respond to his name. Active research: There does seem to be an increased risk for schizophrenia in the autistic population and there are been some genetic markers identified that share some similarity in the two disorders. Having said that the majority of patients with autism will not develop schizophrenia and vice versa. As our understanding of genetics increases we will hopefully learn more about cause, treatment, and prevention.

Accepted Answer

Don't worry: There is no good research that supports the link between autism and fetal ultrasound. Many people have great personal investment in "proving" links between autism and something or another but they have not been proven to be true in real scientific research projects.  If you had so many ultrasounds there must be a medical reason that your doctor ordered them. Ask your doctor why.

The ultrasounds : Don't increase risk of autism. At 35, the risk of genetic errors increases; screening tests are done in the 1st & 2nd trimester.Ask what the specific concerns were about organ development. The structure that becomes the brain & spinal cord started  forming 3 weeks after conception & other organs soon thereafter. Detecting an anomaly is easier ~ 16-18 weeks, so expect more fus's & other tests.

No: Currently, there are no known medical tests to diagnose autism, especially prenatally.  It is diagnosed clinically by assessing behavior, communication and social skills typically at age 12m or older.  While genetics are implicated, very few specific genes have been found in a majority of kids with autism.

i do not have autism, but my 2 brothers do.  my wife has no family history of autism.  what is the chance of our first child having autism?  please let me know if you want more information.

Can't nail this down: There are so many variables, so little data &amp; so much variation in autism spectrum disorders that It's really not possible to calculate the odds that you and your wife will have a child with autism. If a couple has one child with autism, they are more likely to have another one; it's much more common in boys than girls &amp; more common in older fathers.  Beyond that, it's still quite a mystery.

: The autism spectrum is composed of a collection of disorders that have similar features. In the past decade, codonal analysis of various parts of the human genome has found more than 100 different "mistakes" encoded in patients who show autistic features. There are many with the same observed features where no errors are detected.  Future studies may find more, but for now the MA is not conclusive

Not specific: Autism is a disorder of appropriate social and verbal development.  It may present in infancy as a defect in social awareness and eye contact, or later in childhood with regression in verbal language and inability to tolerate social settings.  Some acquire autism due to injury, infection, or other neurological disease.  Once signs are apparent, good therapy is necessary at any age.

Asperger's : Asperger's disorder is one of the autism spectrum disorders and is often diagnosed later in children who are higher functioning socially. Often such children are first diagnosed with sensory integration problems until the social issues become more predominant. Exaggerated skin sensitivity is common in autistic children, manifesting in irritation at the labels on clothing or certain fabrics. If your daughter is beginning to develop towards puberty the nipple sensitivity is common, and extreme sensitivity not surprising in an asperger's child. As to encopresis: it's not a common symptom, but it can occur as well as other bathroom habits (such as not wanting to wipe after defecation or using huge amounts of tissues)
