Ice burn: Ice can cause as much or more damage than heat.  When an ice burn blisters, it indicates there is a burn that extends through a skin layer.  You get him (his knee) into warm water between 104 and 106 degrees and observe, the area should begin to pink up, feel numb and tingling and then regain sensation.  If this does not happen, he needs immediate medical attention.

Don't use ice: Immediate burn treatment should be with cold water until the skin is cool. While unlikely, application of ice may cause a deeper injury, especially if the burn is already deep enough so that there is abnormal sensibility to pain in the area.

Use simple pain meds, such as Ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to help with discomfort. If blisters develop, that would imply a deeper 2nd-degree burn which might need medical evaluation.
