Food introduction: The general recommendation for food introduction in infants is rice cereal at 4 months, vegetables at 5 months, fruits and fruit juices at 6 months, finger foods &amp; meats at 9 months.  A three meal two snack schedule is the usual goal, but adapting this schedule to your family's normal routine should be fine as long as your baby is comfortable and gaining weight appropriately.

When she decides: You can try these at any point, but many infants will reject new items based on texture or their novelty.You can puree any common staple at this point and find a texture that the kid may except.

Food allergy: Allergy to these two foods is rare in my experience; they are well tolerated as first foods by the vast majority of infants older than 6 months. Symptoms of allergy could include vomiting, crampy diarrhea and occasionally a flare -up of pre-existing eczema. Anemia and failure to gain weight/height could indicate coeliac syndrome.

Does not matter: Most of the time we start with rice as it is technically less allergenic. I skip cereal and suggest making whole grain rice and puree it like a cereal. Can do the same with oatmeal. No difference for baby. If you are doing a gluten free diet then no oatmeal.

Your choice: There is a lot of back and forth on the internet about which is better.  I personally don't think it is a huge difference.  I DO think rice cereal is more constipating than single grain oatmeal.

Start at 6 months: Start solids at 6 months of age.  Rice cereal contains arsenic.  Wise to use fortified oatmeal instead of rice cereal. Colic or teething: Oatmeal is a bland cereal and is least likely to cause problems. At this she is probably teething and you maybe mistaking teething for colic. In general infants outgrow colic by three months of age.
