Won't help: Boils will not improve with the use of topical treatments.  They need to be soaked frequently with hot salt or boric acid in water until they come to a head and drain. If they become large they may require surgical incision and drainage. Sometimes antibiotic pills that cover staphylococcus aureus, the usual bacterial cause of boils, need to be given as well.

NO: Most the time you need oral antibiotics and sometimes you need i ncision and drainage to drain the puss out.Lacal antibiotics like neomycine etc should not be used.

Likely not: Recurrent boils are more likely a reflection of an invasive staph that resides quietly in your nasal cavities &amp; spreads to your skin surface when you scratch. Triple antibiotic 2X/d at the front of your nose may stop this as may 1 cup of bleach in bathwater daily for a week. Some may require oral antibiotics to end nasal carriage of staph.

Hot soaks: Soaking the boil in very warm water or applying hot compresses with a clean cloth for 15-20 minutes at least 2-3 times a day. This should bring the boil to a head or cause it to rupture on its own. Sometimes boils need to be lanced since there is a lot of pain involved. Ibuprofen can help. But you may need a provider to look at it since you may require antibiotics, if severely infected.

Old idea: Apply antibiotic ointment on the skin. A short coursr of Cipro (ciprofloxacin) 500 mg twice daily for a week will help.

Yes: Doxycycline can be an effective anti-infective for use to treat boils.

Accepted Answer

Not likely: Boils, more often than not, are caused by staphylococci or other gram-positive organisms and Nitrofurantoin is not the therapy of choice, and is predominantly used for urinary tract infection.  You need to see a doctor, have the boils opened and cultured and be treated based upon the microbiology lab results. Good luck.

Warm soaks: Warm soaks may bring the boil to drain spontaneously.  If not go to the emergency department for a procedure to drain it.  You may need antibiotics.
