can i put drops of rubbing alcohol into my ears to cure an earache?

Accepted Answer

No: Without knowing if the ear drum is intact or not, i would not recommend placing alcohol drops in the ear blindly.  Most often we use use alcohol as a drying agent in the maintenance treatment of swimmer's ears and not as an acute treatment.

had a tube put into left ear on 1/27. have an earache today. is this normal or should i be worried?

Tube: Should relieve pain and allow for drainage. Have it checked, it may be plugged or blocked in which case you would require ear drops. All the best.

High : High pressures generated from a valsalva maneuver that you performed could generate the type of sound that you described if you had a perforation. Also, if you tasted your eardrops that could be an indirect sign of perforation as a pathway from your ear canal, through a perforation, down the eustacian tube, and into the back of your throat. If you haven't seen an ent, it may be wise to have this checked, get a hearing test, and discuss options for possible corrective surgery if you have a perforation, or other appropriate tympanomastoid surgery depending on the severity of the problem.

i had an ear ache, so i put baby oil in it.  now i can't get the oil out?

Irrigation: The oil may have solidified and is attached to either the ear canal skin or even the ear drum.  Try 3% hydrogen peroxide, 4 times a day (dropper full) for a week.  If that does not help see an ENT doctor for proper and safe removal by either microscopic removal or simple irrigation of warm water.

hi.my son is 2 ys and 8 mths old. he woke up crying because of an ear ache . is it safe to put lidosporin drops?if yes after how long and how many?thx

Will not help: These are antibiotic drops and are intended to treat an ear canal infection. The infection your son has is behind the ear drum or in the middle ear. Topical numbing drops may help along with Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen. Also keeping his head elevated. Many children will benefit from an antibiotic. All the best.

Not advisible: If the pain is due to external otitis ( a problem in the ear canal) it would probably make the problem worse. If the problem lies elsewhere, such the middle or inner ear or even the throat, i doubt it will help any more than careful application of heat. On the other hand it could cause more problems, especially in the case of a perforated ear drum. Use tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil and see your doctor first.

See a doctor: This needs to looked at by an md, only by this can you find out why so much discomfort and treat it appropiately.

Maybe: If the drops are antibiotic eye drops, thrycan may be effective in the ear to treat an ear infection.  I would recommend being evaluated by a doctor and using appropriate medications though.

i have a bump under my skin that is not mobile and is tender when pressure is put on it. its directly under my earlobe on my neck, causing ear ache.

Bump: Probable inflamed lymph nodes. Take ibuprofen and apply hot moist compresses. if does not go away, see ENT to check for parotid gland mass.
