102: Remember that a fever is one of the ways the body kills the bacteria or virus. Too high a fever can result in seizures and other problems so if fever goes to 102 or above and does not come down with Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen a doctor would be seen. If the fever is not high but the child is lethargic and not drinking, see doctor too.

Don't eat?: Your doctor has the benefit of having seen your son and may have reasons for that advice, but usually we try to encourage hydration when sick. If he's been vomiting then perhaps your doctor might have meant to avoid heavy foods. It's hard to say without the full history and exam. Hydration however is key and motrin/tylenol for the fever as needed.

Normal temp: He does not have a fever. He may be crabby due to being sleepy. Try to settle him down with a warm bath, soothing music perhaps read him a story. This can be a challenging age group to get to sleep.

There are several possible causes of a persistent infection or fever, but the diagnosis of Kawasaki's disease should be considered.

Unlikely: Your 2 year old may have a virus in his system. Keep him hydrated. If the fever or vomiting persist or he develops new symptoms have him seen by your Doctor.

Control fever: As long as the child doesn't appear severely ill i usually recommend first controlling the fever with Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen).  Usually this gets the child feeling much better.  The heavy breathing is probably from the fever as well, but if he/she appears short of breath then you need to see your doctor.  Push fluids.  If things don't seem to be improving within 48 hrs then see your doctor.

Watchful waiting: As long as he has no symptoms, i would watch him. Push fluids to help bring the temp down. Antipyretics such as tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen if temp goes higher.

Ear OK: The goal of taking the temperature of a child is to determine if they have a fever, which is a temperature over 100.4 f or 38 c. In a baby 6 months or less, it is important to get as accurate of a temp as possible, therefore use a rectal thermometer. In a 2 year old, an estimated temp is fine, so a thermometer which uses the ear or temporal artery is fine and much less invasive.

No: 98.9 axillary temp is normal.  Even if you did add a degree, it's still not a fever. Fever is a temperature above 100.4 F. As in most cases of fever, it's not about the temp "number" but instead how the child feels/acts. Fever reducing meds are used for comfort, not to make the number get lower. Always check with your doc before giving fever reducer so you give the right dose.
