No difference : Most urine drug screens would only show benzodiazepines and not differentiate between the two. A more definitive and expensive test such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry would show them separately.

It depends: on whether the test is a rapid test cup or sent to the lab.  If the rapid cup they can not tell the difference  if they send it off they can tell the exact type of benzo taken.

have been tapering down from 1.5mg of xanax (alprazolam) down to approx. .20mg experiencing insomnia and increase anxiety should i switch to 5mg of valium or continue my taper w xanax (alprazolam). because vali is long lasting?

Detoxing: Your brain is addicted. This brain will do everything it can to interfere with your plan to get healthy.  It is not healthy to switch mid-stream to another addictive medication.  That is not good medicine and will prolong your recovery from this addiction.  Perhaps you should add some fellowship program with other addicts who have gotten off of their prescription medications and are healthy.

Xanax (alprazolam): Those are high doses of benzos. Your doctor realizes that these are habit forming at these doses as well as that pills are useful but not the final answer and are merely a crutch.

Xanax (alprazolam) has short effect: Your gp is probably about right in terms of the immediate effects of xanax (alprazolam) versus valium, but the two are quite different in terms of how long effects last. In my opinion, valium is a much safer medication than xanax (alprazolam), because it stays acts for much longer and gradually tapers. Withdrawal symptoms, on the other hand, can occur within three or four hour of having taken a dose of xanax (alprazolam). If on xanax (alprazolam) for a long time, it has to be tapered very slowly even if valium is being taken at the same time.
