Ekg: An EKG is an eletrical tracing of the heart activity. Damaged muscle or conduction tissue creates an abnormal EKG.  Cardiac enlargement can be present with a normal EKG. So can early coronary disease. And so can a valve disease.

how can an ekg show if ive had a heart attack? ive been having heart problems and my doctor wants to do an ekg. she says it will show if ive had a heart attack. how does it do that?

EKGs : Ekgs are great screening tools to look for major heart problems, and in particular can show evidence of an old heart attack. An ekg is a measurment of electrical activity in the heart and when you have a prior heart attack, the heart cells affected no longer work correctly, and this can show up as abnormal electical activity. Particularly very specific downward deflections (q-waves) in certain patterns can suggest this. But recognize that not all q-waves indicate prior heart attack. If your doctor is concerned, they may order a more confirmatory test.

No: They will not cause any harm beyond the anxiety that you feel when you worry about them.

Possible: Ecg and treadmill ECG test are by no means comprehensive evaluation of the heart and do not rule out all heart disease when normal. Structural heart disease would be best assessed by imaging such as echocardiography.

Usually: First, the chance that a 25 y/o would have a heart attack is very small. Making a diagnosis is a combination of detailed history physical exam and selected tests. For heart disease family history and risk factor analysis are very important. Can these tests be negative and miss something? Yes but a 25 y/o with all neg tests the chance is very small. If you are still concerned then get 2nd opinion.

Need More Exam: Although your ekg was normal you may still have heart problems.You should consult a cardiologist. I doubt this is your problem though. A better physical exam and history may lead to other causes such as myofascial pain or trigger points. Trigger points are extremely common and my be the cause.

Yes it could: There are several changes on ECG that might indicate right sided chamber enlargement or strain.  This may be acutely or chronically.   What you may be asking is could these right sided abnormalities occur without ECG changes and yes that might happen too.  An echocardiogram would help clarify,  if there is a significant suspicion of right sided abnormalities.

Might or might not: Heart ultrasound (echocardiogram) looks primarily at the anatomy of the heart and its function. It may detect valve problems, contractility issues or other structural abnormalities. It may not be able to detect any arrhythmias (except for possible atrial fibrilation) or tell you about presence of coronary artery disease. Ecg on the other hand may not be able to give you ample info on the anatomy.

my ecg report shows 'sinus tachycardia & rbbb'. is that a serious problem?

Need more: Information s/t is hr &gt; 100 so it could be 101 or 150 serious depends upon higher rate and if it is at rest and because it's always due to some underlying condition like fever dehydration heart disease so it is serious and be clarified by a cardiologist RBBB Not serious
