Varies : If the community has a good vaccination rate the chance of exposure is minimized. The vaccination is generally given first at 1 yr or later because earlier administration is not as dependable for providing long term  protection. Avoiding unvaccinated kids or exposure to adults with shingles can help decrease risk of the disease.By the time a kid has spots, they have already been contagious &gt; 24hrs.

Rare if ever: If you had true cpx after a year of age you likely have lifelong immunity.People with immune defects or after a bone marrow transplant may be susceptible.Some kids having it under 6mo may be only partially protected, but there are few available to confirm this.Many blister producing illnesses are mislabeled as cpx, so many assume they have it again when misdiagnosed.

Depends: The best answer depends on the perspective. If you count the 10-21 days that you incubate & have the quiet stage prior to breaking out it is quite long. A person becomes contagious a day or so before breaking out, has crops of new blisters for 3-5 days  & then is not contagious after the last one dries out, about 6 days after the first spot.

Confusing question: Chicken pox heals over time by itself. Any medication taken during the illness (zovirax) may help reduce the intensity of the illness but it does not "kill" the chicken pox virus or change the timetable of resolution. If you have had chickenpox , your body will develop antibodies that prevent a future case. The medication does not alter that process.

Chicken pox-no fun!: Chicken pox (varicella) is best treated with supportive care -- Acetaminophen for pain, and oral Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at the appropriate dose for weight, aveeno oatmeal baths, and non-steroid anti-itch creams for the itch.  Anti-viral medications are only indicated if someone has an immune deficiency or severe eczema.  The best 'treatment' is prevention -- getting the chicken pox vaccine!

Depends on variables: Most will only have it once. Some have other blister producing illnesses like hand/food/mouth disease and are mislabeled cpx, only to have real cpx later. A handful of people with immune deficiencies and those that have had a bone marrow transplant may have it again (should get the vaccine). For 99.9% of the population, 1 is the magic number.

No: Chicken pox is an initial varicella viral infection that spreads through-out the body and causes the wide-spread blistering rash. However , a more localized form is referred to as 'shingles' or zoster and that is a reoccurrence of chicken pox.

Chicken pox: The incubation period for chickenpox is 14-21 days with the majority of susceptible children beginning to manifest fever and vesicular ( pox -pink base with clear blister on top) lesions by day 10. The lesions appear in "crops" over 4-5 days. A child is considered contagious up to 48 hours prior to onset of symptoms and up to 24 hours after last 'crop" of lesions has occured and crusted into scabs.

Yes.: The current cdc recommendation is for 2 doses, regardless of age, for anyone school age and older who has never had chickenpox.
