Sleeping on arms: A variety of things happens depending on the exact position. Occlusive pressure on nerves or vessels can produce symptoms. One example is polularly called saturday night palsy when someone passes out with their arm over a chair. Stress on the joints can produce other symptoms releated to nerve compression or stress producing weakness and/or numbness.

as a massage therapist i get many who sleep upon their hands and arms who also have neuropathy. none of their doctors have asked them about it, why?

It can happen: Certainly one can get transient paresthesia from such an action but frank neuropathy would seem odd.  When you sleep on your hand you are causing a decreased blood flow to the area.  In an extreme case this can cause damage and possible neuropathy.  I can't say as I have ever had a patient have neuropathy without extensive damage being done to the muscles or skin.

: It sounds like a neuropathy that may originate at the neck level or anywhere along the upper extremities nerves. Would start by checking pillow/ mattress, neck position during the night. If symptoms persist see your doc for an exam.

See ortho: You need to consult an orthopedic surgeon about this I would guess that carpal tunnel syndrome would be one of the possibilities. The problem is likely at the wrists.

Most commonly,: I would consider carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome, i.e., nerve compression at wrist or elbow.  If you have lupus, you would be more susceptible to peripheral nerve issues and best to have this evaluated by your physician.

Wear a splint.: You are likely pinching a nerve in your arm somewhere along its course - often at the wrist although other courses are possible.  Try wearing a splint to hold your wrist in neutral position.

Neuropathy: Can be B12 deficiency.....common. Carpal tunnel......next in order. Ulnar nerve anomaly....less common.

Nerve compression: Your symptoms are suggestive of a nerve entrapment problem;most commonly the median nerve @your wrists(carpal tunnel syndrome) or your ulnar nerve @your elbows(cubital tunnel syndrome).See your PCP or orthopedic surgeon for examination and definitive diagnosis.Best of Luck!

Posture: You may possess carpal tunnel syndrome, but could be compressing the ulnar nerve at the elbow.  Unlikely that this represents neck or shoulder issues, although possible.  Nerve conduction testing may provide answers.

You need examination: This may be positional but no one can tell without examining you. You need to see an orthopedic or neurological surgeon to evaluate your repeating symptoms.
