Should not: Cause a cramp. That would be from something else. As you have ehlers danlos  you could have pulled something . You need an eval!!

Often times both: I've answered questions for you on other occasions though I don't recall this category.  A disc herniation at L4/L5 could cause both back pain as well as result in radiation of that pain down nerve root distributions which go into the leg. Potentially: If spinal cord becomes severe enough, it can start to affect the legs, although there are other potential causes.  Either way, I would be seen in follow up immediately.

Good start: That would be a good start.  You may also find a pmr doctor or general orthopedic surgeon who could be helpful.  They will do a good neurological exam, likely prescribe physical therapy which can be very helpful and see if you need any further testing, or treatment.

sudden upsurge in lumbar pain & shooting pains into both shins(front) my usual sciatica is back of left leg.can sciatica cause shooting pains into both shins? i have had longterm l5s1 disc herniation managed with scs.this is new pain?

: It is rare to have pain in both legs at the same time but it could. If you have pain over the lateral part of the leg, it can be related to sciatica but not the front (over the shin) or medial aspect of the leg.

Sciatica : Sciatica is a definite possibility.  This usually is caused by pressure on the nerve commonly as it exits your lower spine from a disc bulge or herniation, or possibly from a bone spur.  Stretching exercises, physical therapy, chiropractic care are all reasonable initial treatments.  However, if the pain persists or is associated with more severe symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, or bowel/bladder incontinence -- you need to seek medical attention from an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon.

l4l5 disc herniation 6 months ago with sciatica. now i have burning pain in calf only after standing for 10 min. relief when i sit down. what can i do?

Get help: The burning represent inflammation or compression to the nerve roots at that location. Oral steroid dospak, epidural injections and surgical decompression are all reasonable, as is spinal,cord stimulation.  Medications such as gabapentin, or pregabilin are most helpful in stopping the nerve pain. You need evaluation by pain doc to determine which is best for you. MRI and EMG should be checked.

Location, location: L5 and S1 nerve root compression or irritation will produce pain radiating all the way down to the feet. (L4 tends to stop at the knee)  Where in the back the issue is requires more of a look see as the nerve roots exit the cord at about the L1  spine level then drop down (as the cauda equina) to exit at a lower level of the spine) A disk herniation at L4 can compress any nerve root that passes by

Accepted Answer

Radiculopathy: Sometimes disc herniation can be treated with pain medicine and physical therapy.  The concern is that unstable disc material can cause more than pain, it can cause numbness and weakness.  If there is unstable anatomy causing the problem, surgery may be the most effective treatment.
