Pharmacy creams: Ringworm is actually a fungal infection (not a worm) of the skin.  You can treat it with over the counter antifungals such as Clotrimazole cream (and there are many others).  Clean the area, dry it and then apply the cream several times per day.  If it persists longer than about 2 weeks, you might want to see a dermatologist for alternative applications.

: I know that ringworm involving the scalp usually requires oral antifungal medication for weeks. Your friend may well be a candidate for both oral and topical antifungal treatment but I'd leave the decision to a dermatologist with experience in treating extensive ringworm infections.

Ringworm: of the scalp Or Tinea Capitis, Should be treated orally as well as topically.  daily ketoconazole can only help, not hurt.

my doc told me i have scalp ringworm. i have been on nizoral (ketoconazole) pills and shampoo for 3 weeks and the bald spot on my head has doubled in size. normal?

It's probably not: ringworm.  Nizoral (ketoconazole) pills are dangerous to the liver so I would get in to derm, you may just have alopecia areata

: You can get anti-fungal cream at your local drug store without a prescription. Give that a try, but if the issue is not resolved in a week or so, it would be prudent to see a doctor. There is no need to be embarrassed, It is a just an infection like any other infection. It does not reflect on your character.

To confirm diagnosis: A fungal infection often with ring-shaped lesion with serpentine borders and mild, flaky scales. Topical lamisil, lotrimin, or tinactin (tolnaftate) are available otc and all seem to work fine for simple ringworm on body, not scalp/bearded areas. Keep area clean, dry and apply the cream 2-3x/day should get rid of it in about 10-14 days. If not better, consult doc for possible alternate diagnosis. Good luck.

Yes and no: While dermatologists are the experts, and a microscopic potassium hydroxide skin scrapping examination can confirm the diagnosis, a primary care doctor can usually make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe treatment just based on appearance
