is it really important to use moisturizers on my face? i am 36 yrs old and have had 2 children.i have very sensitive skin and have had it my whole life. i can only use neutrogena glycerin soap for my face. i can not use any thing that has any type of mois

Perhaps : Perhaps you are allergic or sensitive to an ingredient in the moisturizers.  Skin allergy patch testing can help determine if you have an allergy.  One moisturizer that i recommend for sensitive skin and acne prone patients is vanicream, which is available on the internet and at select stores.  It is very gentle and tolerated by most patients.  Keeping your skin moist is very important as is wearing a moisturizer with sunscreen on a daily basis to protect your skin.

Varied options: Acne treatments are often geared toward the types of acne bumps you have.  Blackheads and whiteheads often respond well to things containing salicylate acid or benzoyl peroxide some of which can be found at your local drug store. Inflamed pimples and pustules often need some form of antibiotic, either topically or from a pill. A dermatologist can help if simple things don't work.

Non-comedogenic: I am glad to hear that you understand that despite acne or oil-prone skin, it is very important to moisturize daily. The key to a good moisturizer is to ensure it is non-comedogenic or non-pimple forming. Cetaphil, cerave, neutrogena and aveeno (oatmeal) all make great moisturizers that fall into this category.

OTC Acne Treatment: If one is getting scarring (not staining, but depressed or pitted scars), one should seek a medical opinion for prescription treatment. The following can be used:

clogged pores (whiteheads and blackheads):
- retinol at bedtime
- salicylic acid
- glycolic acid
- benzoyl peroxide

inflammatory lesions (red bumps and/or pus bumps)
- benzoyl peroxide gel
- topical sulfur.

i have neutrogena rapid clear pads for my face. one side has little circles on them and the other side is smooth. which side do i use first?

Salicylic Acid 2%: Per Neutrogena product description: the side of the pad that is textured is what you would use to cut through oil and waxy plugs. But be careful, in addition to a proprietary cleanser, these pads contain 2% salicylic acid acne treatment  that may be harsh on your skin. Use as directed on the packaging and follow-up with your PCP or Dermatologist if you have additional questions or concerns.

could i use vicco turmeric cream for my face?

Maybe: Vicco turmeric is a cream with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.  One of the ingredients (sandalwood oil) is comedogenic, so if you are prone to breakouts, this may worsen them.

should i use an astrigent for my face if i have acne?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: If you have oily skin, an astringent might be helpful in controlling the secretion of sebum (oil). While this will not control your acne, it will help the other medications prescribed by your dermatologist in controlling it. If you don't have oily skin, an astringent will just dry you out.

Oily Face: Use cetaphil dermacontrol oil control foam wash and cetaphil dermacontrol non-comedogenic oil control moisturizer.

i have oily skin and my skin is very sensitive to sun as it gets dark very fast in sun. which type of sunscreen is suitable for my face ?

Check with your doc: You probably need at least 45 sf
