started using tretinoin for mulluscum. i became inflamed and irritated, and it's still spreading. i got spooked and stopped using it. at first i thought this was the mulluscum, but now i don't. does this mean i have an allergy? or will it get better?

Diagnosis needed: A visit to your pediatrician or urgent care will be needed as a firm diagnosis will be needed. All meds for molluscum will trigger an inflammatory reaction in general. Alternate diagnoses may be possible as well. If indeed molluscum, most get better by themselves, but it takes months.

for my face. i have a lot of white heads and black heads. my face started to itch and build allergies. is this normal?

Yes: Your face is itchy, but not from allergies. During introduction of tretinoin it is usually irritating. With continued use the skin will tolerate it without itch, redness, peeling, etc. Use of other acne topicals , harsh washing, and use of large amounts make this worse. Wash gently. Wait at least 15min after wash before application. Use very small amt., use moisturizers. Skip 1 or 2 nights when se

Accepted Answer

Yes.: Tretinoin or Retin-A, is used for sun damage to skin, acne, age spots, and wrinkles.  So, it is reasonable to use in your case unless you have a contra-indication.  Discuss with your PCP about dosing.

Acne: You have acne and are treating it with tretinoin gel for 3 mo w/o satisfaction. 80% of teenagers say they get good to excellent results after 2 mo of alternating tretinoin with benzoyl peroxide. There are different strengths of both Benz and tretinoin. Also if you infected lesions antibiotics may be necessary. YouEatEnoughProtein?: Retin-A is more of an exfoliant;it gets the cells cranking faster (faster "turnover")so that it can supposedly "rejuvinate"itself.Supposedly,the lower layers will thicken.But I've noticed that there is a great deal of individual variations in response to that med.It's pretty powerful. It's supposed to help with wrinkles, like the fine ones from smoking,but you'll need a dermatologist to supervise

any way to atleast fade fordyce spots? i don't wanna hear the "they're natural". i just wanna know if you can make them appear less bumpy (tretinoin)?

Fordyce spots: Fordyce spots are sebaceous glands inunusual places, so yes, they are "natural" however, i'm with you, they need to go!  sometimes ablative lasers like the co2 or erbium laser can help.  There is interesting research going on regarding the use of photodynamic therapy to get rid of overgrown sebaceous glands.  Tret may shrink em a little but it won't eliminate them.  Good luck!

can i use hydroquinoine + tretinoin on my linea negra?

: Many dermatologists advise  a combination of these two along  with a  topical  steroid. The tretinoin helps the absorption of hydroquinone , but should be avoided during pregnancy . 
Linea nigra often takes months to clear and protection form sunlight may help this . 
Sometimes dermatologists advise certain oral medications along with the above.

is tretinex different than renova (tretinoin)?

Tretinex=Acne Only: Tretinex is acutaine and used for acne. Tretinoin (Retin-A) is a cream used to treat sun dsmaged skin. Renova, in my opinion, has no use as it is tretinoin mixed with mineral oil to prevent its penetrating the skin, thus markedly reducing its effectiveness. At your age, tretinoin is what you need. See a plastic surgeon or dermatologist experienced in skin rejuvenation.

can tretinoin be used on top of pustules? is it helpful?

Yes and no: Tretinoin is a prescription medicine used in acne and typically helps with comedonal acne (blackheads) and typically the topical antibiotics are more helpful for pustules.  However if you are having pustular acne you already have comedonal acne so you do need a medication like tretinoin to help open up the pores.  Use daily as prescribed
