As long as it takes!: Acid reflux tends to be a chronic problem. I typically recommend patients continue with treatment as long as their symptoms persist. There are some downsides to treatment which can include malabsorption of calcium so over treatment is possible.

Depends: Gerd tends to be a chronic recurrent condition. Therefore i tell my adult patients they will typically be on their medication indefinitely, at least on and off.

GERD/MEDICATIONS: Good idea to take meds if you have persistant gerd, along with lifestyle modifications.Like losing weight  if overweight.Avoiding certain foods which cause gerd, not eating less than 3 hours before going to bed, avoid alcohol, do not drink too much coffee or tea and meds in the beginning.You can try to stop meds and see if it stops
if not you need long term meds to prevent esophagitis/cancer.

and CARAFATE (sucralfate)....ask your Pharmacist for examples!

GERD: Gerd and laryngopharnygeal reflux can be a significant trigger for asthma, see a specialist (allergist) familiar with both LPR and asthma if you pcp does not seem to understand this association or recommend appropriate or effective management.

4 years ago reflux started and lead to non h-pylori gastritis. quit smoking, i'm not overweight, and quit drinking. chronic gerd persists. take 20mg aciphex daily. i reflux drinking water. anything else i can add medication wise to help avoid cancer

Depends: The best drug for you depends on many factors, including what other medical conditions you have and medications you take. An antihistamine acid blocker or a proton pump inhibitor are most commonly prescribed to treat GERD. (examples are ranitidine or omeprazole)
