6-9 months: There are 2 considerations for recovery after acl reconstruction. First is the immediate surgery recovery, which can vary depending on surgeon and whether your own tendon is used. Generally you can be walking normally somewhere between 1 and 6 weeks. More importantly, the graft does not reincorporate until 6-8 months for your own and 8-9 months for donor graft. You cannot be pivoting before then.

8-9 months: Although the time before your surgeon let's you return to sports varies, any pivoting sports place great forces through the reconstruction. An autograft acl (your own tendon) typically takes 6-7 months to mature while an allograft acl (donor tendon) typically takes 8-9 months to mature. The higher your performance level, the more important it is to wait for the acl to heal and mature. 8-9 months!

9-12 months: Optimal recovery from an acl reconstruction can be as little as 6 months. However, typical recovery and full return to sports is in the 9-12 month range. Post-operative rehab is extremely important.

how long does it take to recover from an acl surgery? i just had an acl surgery 7 weeks ago, going through pt right now. how much longer do i need to be in pt and how long would the entire recovery process be?

If : If you are making steady gains in pt, i would recommend continuing until you are released to full contact activities.  At 12 weeks post-surgery you can begin jogging and sport specific exercises.  I usually tell patients it will take 9-12 months until they are completely released to full contact sports.

Isometric exercises: During recovery from surgery, start with isometric exercises to accommodate rest/recovery. Follow your surgeons instructions regarding therapy for your knee. At most gyms there are rowing and cycle type machines that work your arms only. Check in with your surgery team and make a follow up appointment.

my daughter is having mcl surgery.. i cannot find much about it or the recovery online. is recovery similar to an acl reconstruction?

MCL repairs R not-: -common these days. If a bone fragment came off with the ligament, it's a faster recovery as it is fixed solidly by wires or screws. If this a reconstruction,  about the same as an ACL as far as recovery, which again depends on what is used as the graft. Expect a brace with limited motion, especially in extension. In extension the MCL is very tight so usually it's @ about -30 of extension.&amp;rehab.

In due time...: I have my patients wear a brace until 6-9 weeks postop. While many patients are able to put partial weight on the leg w/ the aid of crutches, it is not unusual for them to feel weakness/ pain @ 4 wks that prevent them from fully walking on their own. You should discuss specifics with your physical therapist/ surgeon as each protocol varies slightly.

Varies: It varies a little based upon the the patient and also the surgical technique used.  Most people are doing fairly well by about two weeks with an approximate 8-12 weeks to return to unrestricted activities.  The decision to do an acl is based in large part on the activity level of the person (low demand vs high demand) and also how much instability clinically the patient has.  Thank you.

Varies: It varies somewhat, based in part on the specifics of the graft and also surgeons preference.  Most can resume rehab early with goal of returning to sports by 12 weeks.

Accepted Answer

Expect Hard Work: 80% of the outcome is dependent on good post-op therapy.  Early active range of motion, weight-bearing as tolerated usually at first.  Strengthening with closed chain exercises can start within the second month.  By 4 months, it is possible to return to competitive sports if the therapy effort has restored 80% of thigh strength.  Surgery takes 2 hrs., and is outpatient usually.
