This therapy is often effective in controlling muscle and spinal pain when used in a physcial therapy situation.

Depends: It depends on why you are having pt.  You may have a neurologic conditon that is causing some of your problems.  You may have an electrolyte issues such as abnormal calcium, magnesium or potassium.  You may just have poor conditioning and the work load you are doing is stimulating sick muscles and in turn, they cramp.  Work with your doctor and therapist.

Physical therapy: Ice, rest are the first measures to take in case of a pulled (torn) chest muscle. Taking an antiinflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen/naproxen may be helpful to alleviated pain/discomfort. Physical therapy should be delayed until it is tolerable. The physical therapist will decide on the techniques to be used. It could be heat/cold applications, ultrasound stimulation, tens unit etc.

Quad injury: Initially for any injury you want to ice, rest and elevate for the first 24-48 hours.  Add in nsaids like ibuprofen.  Once pain has diminished, start gentle stretching of the quads - after injury we tend to get tight b/c of disuse.  After a week, you can add in isometric exercises: wall sits are great.  Gradually increase strength exercises w/ weights and squats to prevent reinjury. Good luck!

Whiplash injury: Muscle pain after whiplash can take a while to resolve. Make sure your  doctor has cleared your cervical spine (bones in uour neck), then try to get the muscles moving right. Myofascial / massage can really help.

my back pain does not have anything to do with my spine, but is muscle related only. i have had it for 1.5 years and it will not go away. is there a way i can ever heal this? i have done physical therapy, but it has not really helped. thank you?

: First you have to have a diagnosis of the problem. If seeing a physical therapist they should be able to determine extend of problem and rehabilitate if only musculature   See orthopedic surgeon for a diagnosis and treatment    You mention leg strengthening but not in butt area?

: Consider the use of BOTOX injections to control areas of spasticity and pain.  An experienced pediatric or adult neurologist can assist. Physical therapy will subsequently be increasingly valuable.

will muscle relaxers help with stiff neck caused from surgery or will i have to go through with physical therapy. my nerves are still going haywire.

Accepted Answer

Therapy is best: Muscle relaxers will not help with nerve issues and if you do not have spasticity, then they will more likely be sedatives then actually treating the underlying pathology, which therapy will address. You may have some scar tissue which could be contributing, depending on the surgery, and again, therapy could help with range of motion where muscle relaxers will not do anything but put you to sleep.
