You should be seen by a family practice doctor or internist or cardiologist or pulmonary specialist.  (since you're using the medical term "orthopnea", i assume you've already seen one?

Find the cause: Orthopnea is shortness of breath when you lay flat.  Treatment of this symptom always depends on finding a cause (ie fluid in the lungs, heart failure and dysfunction of the diaphragm).  These causes are all treated differently.

: This could, indeed, be due to significant gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). You could prove this—and get relief, probably—by trying OTC Prilosec or other proton pump inhibitor (PPI) about an hour before bedtime. Should this not be effective, and it may take a couple of days, you should consider seeing you healthcare provider. Good luck for relief!

i will see a cardiologist for a suspected chf. i have headaches, dizziness, and orthopnea. i feel weak and out of breath most of the time, even stationary. it's getting worse. what can i do to help myself until i see a cardiologist besides er? otc?
