Additionally there are meds that can be administered inside the vessel directly at the site of an identified blood clot to dissolve it. Compression pads are used to keep blood from sitting stagnate which could result in clots.

Routine Activity: Routine exercise and activity will help to prevent stasis of the blood in the leg veins, one of the predisposing factors for dvt.  See your primary doctor for routine yearly exam, and if you have a family history or risk factor history, further testing may be recommended.  Varicose veins, swelling  can be helpful external signs of venous insufficiency which can be associated with dvt.

Depends: While there are no specific guidelines for when to resume the exercise, it depends on the amount of clot in the lungs and the legs (clot burden), how are your symptoms, and type of exercise you are talking about. Basic idea is not to exert yourself to aggravate the lung function when the clot is fresh, and not to let the fresh clot in the leg to move to the lungs. Light exercises Ok if tolerated.

DVT: Blood is a red liquid normally held within arte4ries and veins. It has to be able to clot normally to prevent leakage through small damages. If it clots more than normally, the clots can clog veins and arteries causing serious problems from damage to organs. Deep veins lead to the lung arteries and clots can travel to the lungs causing a serious and many times fatal pulmonary embolism.

Only temporarily: In the short term, it is advisable to avoid strenous activity in an effort to prevent movement of the clots.  Generally, after you have been on appropriate blood thinners for a reasonable amount of time, your doctor will clear you to participate in normal levels of activity.  In fact, as you recover, activity can help reduce your risk of developing swelling in your legs.

You don't have to: Exercise(to prevent blood clots) but at least make the effort to get up and about, every hour.  You can also utilize seated calf raises to help pump blood out of your legs.
