can there be an age limit to having protein shakes?

Accepted Answer

Not commercial ones!: Not the commericial ones like eas, atkins, muscle milk, etc. I would be leary of letting a child under thirteen mix their own. But i see know harm for someone 36 to whenever, if kidney disease or liver disease is not present!

age 60, male, gfr is 59.7 lower limit and 69 upper limit. creatine is 130, been working out real hard in p/t in the last 2 months strenuous exercise for shoulder. bun and protein in blood is in range. your thoughts please?

: It would be prudent to consult a nephrologist to exclude early kidney disease and to take preventive measures. Strenuous exercise alone should not reduce your GFR.

Protein: Take your weight in pounds and divide by 2.2  (that gives you your weight in kilograms. The average adult needs about 0.8 to 1gram of protein per kilogram of weight.
As for sugar.... Wheither simple sugar or complex carbohydrates- for a typical diet, about 15- 20% of the calories  from protein, 60-65% of the calories from carbohydrates, whole grains and fiber rich products instead of simple sugars.

i have a blood test result of "serum total protein level 83g/l".  my question: is this above the normal reference limit?

Slightly elevated: The reference range for total protein is typically 60-80g/L. Variation between labs running the test may explain your result. Best to review with your doctor to be sure how best to interpret this finding.

have any studies determined an upper limit for daily protein intake, assuming you have no underlying conditions? if you ate more than this estimated limit, but still met your nutritional requirements / energy intake were balanced, what might happen?

: The Atkins diet is a diet with very high protein which can be doubled the recommended protein intake. This diet is used for weight loss and fighting diabetes mellitus. However, it is not easy to follow for a long time because your will crave for sweetened foods. If you do not have liver or kidney disease, high protein diet, especially with vegetarian protein, is safe.

: That it is not clear and has bacteria and has protein in it. It should be interpreted in the conext of the reason it was done.

No worries please.: The test results take into account the concentration of protein in the urine, not just the amount.  If you had consumed more fluids and made more urine, the total amount of protein would be the same even tho there was more urine.  Example: if you have a cup of salt water and add more water to it, the water will be less salty but the total amount of salt will stay the same.

i have peanut allergy. do i need to limit my dating partners to those who never eat peanuts? can enough peanut protein be transferred through kissing?

Peanut allergy: This would depend on how allergic you are. Ask the Dr who tested you.

blood work and 24hr urine test done. total protein and creatine within limits. urine showed creatine 3.4 g/24hr and protein 180 mg/24hr. are these numbers cause for concern? there was spillage which i put into the can and may have went over 24hrs?

: By the total creatinine in the urine, the sample was over-collected, i.e. the sample is more than 24 hours so the total protein is erroneously high, i.e. not truly 180 mg for 24 hours. Your urine protein/creatinine is 0.05 which is completely normal.
