Splint: Question is not clear regarding the age of the patient involved.

Generally speaking, i would have this deformity evaluated by a board certified foot and ankle physician.

Foot xrays can help determine any underlying bone involvement or deformity.

Treatment may range from benign neglect, to symptomatic relief and splinting to possible surgical intervention.

: Any deformity of toes or foot structure requires an exam and treatment by an orthopedic surgeon.  There are newer surgical procedures now available, so consult a university orthopedic department for  a referral for a physician who specializes in foot surgery.

Hereditary: Club foot is a deformity than can be seen in certain populations more than others, and if a parent has clubfoot there is a chance that a child may have it.  The sandal gap refers to the appearance of the big toe being further away from the other toes when an ultrasound is performed on the fetus in the womb.

Up to 33%: Fetal talipes equinovarus with or without sandal gap may be associated with a chromosomal abnormality as often as 33% of times, and when associated, other abnormalities are found. The most common association is with trisomy 18 (having an extra chromosome #18). In one study only 22% had isolated talipes.

Rare hazards: We worry about fungal infections of the foot when showering barefoot at public showers and walking barefoot through a locker room. Staph. Infections would be a concern if sharing towels, razors, other equipment. Your risk should be very low if wearing shower shoes and only using your own equipment/toiletries.

i used to wear sandals a lot for roughly 3 years and its been over a year since i stopped wearing them and my sandal tan hasn't faded. should i be concerned? i haven't exfoliated the area in a long time, may that help?

Accepted Answer

: Sometimes skin is damaged  with pigmentation and does not recover by itself. Please protect the skin from sun and use  spf 30 skin  moisturizer and you can exfoliate . See a dermatologist for further treatment. Hope it helps.

Yes: There are a variety of sandal manufacturers that produce sandals with arch support. Most of the good running stores will carry some. Some examples are: keen, birkenstock, fit flops, naots, think, mephisto, finn comfort and chaco. There are many others that can provide you some extra support.  See what works best for you. Dr l.

do people ever get plantar warts from someones sandal?

Possible: The wart virus is common to the skin area.  When you get a break in the skin the virus can penetrated into the epidermal layers and develop into a painful verruca-wart.
