started taking pep after 2 full weeks. i recently went to get test with a prick test and the result was negative after 4 weeks of the exposure. is it conclusive that i am negative because i started taking the pep late?

In general if you are negative at 4 weeks you are generally safe. Although the CDC still recommends HIV testing up to 6 months to guarantee no conversion.

: An HIV test while on PEP is not accurate. It's stated that you have to wait 6 weeks to know your status. Your public health department can advise you further on this matter.

PeP treatment: One should never test for HIV when on the post a exposure prophylaxis treatment. But once the 30 days are up and the medication is stopped then on day 14 one can get the HIV RNA test and the results will be 100% valid.

HIV testing: Very accurate. Pep is also very effective. I would test one more time in one month, but it sounds like you do not have hiv.

: After PEP, the AgAb ("4th generation") HIV blood tests are conclusive after 6 weeks. However, to give a margin of error, some experts advise testing at 3 months. Your negative results at 5 and 7 months are conclusive for sure. You do not have HIV. No more testing is needed.

: These results are 100% proof you do not have HIV, if not exposed again. Move on without worry.

: No data exist on time to conclusive HIV testing after PEP. In absence of data, various experts have different judgments. Most agree 6 weeks is sufficient. Even those who recommend 3 months often believe 6 weeks is OK, but without clear data, they like providing a margin of safety in their advice. But most have never had a patient negative at 6 weeks with later turned out to be infected.

: You misunderstand the "reference range" and its meaning. If below the cut-off value (usually 0.9), the result is negative. Values of, say, 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, or 0.85 all are equally negative; they are not measures of small amounts of antibody. The exact same specimen tested 10 times will give 10 different numbers, which could vary from 0.1 to. 0.8, especially if tested with different lots of reagents.

: Probably it is conclusive, although some experts advise final testing 3 months after the last dose of PEP.

Yes: If you are seronegative one year after exposure you do not have HIV disease acquired at that time. Do you know if your sexual partner is hiv+?
