A trip to yourent doctor will help identify what you are dealing with. 80% of the masses within the parotid are benign in nature so odds are with you that it isn't a malignancy. Regardless, it must be evaluated with possible imagery, biopsy and excision.

Parotid spasm: The parotid gland is on of the large glands that makes saliva. The duct or tube that drains it secretes saliva into the mouth from the cheek oposite the second molar. I that tube is blocked or partially blocked, the gland spasms as it tries to secrete the saliva. The tube can be swollen from an inflammatory process or there could be a stone, it could be from dehydration, or it could be from tumor.

Make them work/moist: Your parotid glands make saliva. If you can make the work (produce saliva) tou might be able to unclog them, so suck on hard candy, preferably sugar free,  to get them going. Also if throat dries out, it can block ducts, so drink alot of water. If that does not work, see ENT for possible sludge in ducts or blockage of duct with a stone. There are new endoscopic ways of treating those problems.

Benign?: The most effective way to " reduce" the size of parotid glands that are not swollen and infected is surgical excision or parotidectomy. 
Older males with both parotid glands enlarged need a work up.

Bad things: You could leak saliva out of your face continuously.  You could get a flesh-eating bacterial infection that would require removal of a big portion of the surrounding tissue.  You could paralyze part of your face.  Why would you want to do that?

Stones...masses: Inflammatory processes inside the parotid gland can cause pain.  This can be from a stone/sludge blocking the drainage system or from a lump in the gland from a tumor.  Positive signs- reapidly developing swelling, pain, foul taste in the mouth when you press on the face.  Bad signs- change in the movement of the face muscles, trouble swallowing.
